Responsibilities for Participation in the Program
The value you derive from Experiential Programs (Co-op Ed, Internships, Community Service) depends, in great part, on your full cooperation and close relationship with The Career Center Office. It is essential, therefore, that you:
- 1. comply with all the requirements and instructions on the Program, and from the staff, and
- 2. keep the Office fully and promptly informed on all aspects of your participation in the Program.
The purpose of obtaining this complete and timely information is to make certain that the job preparation, placement and placement services are provided effectively and efficiently for maximum benefit to you.
The Career Center staff needs both substantive and procedural information in order to make a proper assessment of your learning and career development, to determine the appropriateness of the job and to achieve the best match of a student and job.
Substantive Information
Students should share with the Program Director or Coordinator, the following kinds of information:
- their feelings regarding career choice and future aspirations.
- their personal characteristics, likes and dislikes.
- their previous work experience including value, shortcomings, relations with employers, co-workers, earnings, hours worked, etc.
- their preference for the work experience job, type of firm, type of assignment, supervision, co-workers, work environment, schedule of hours, location, and pay.
- their readiness for the job experience.
- their commitment to high quality, responsible performance including completion of the job accepted.
Procedural Information
The substantive information must be accompanied by the procedural information required because they are mutually relevant to the effectiveness of the Program. Every contact and action is included in a log for students and a log for employers which must be complete and up to date for appropriate job referrals and needed action. It is in the student's best interest to comply with all the procedural requirements of the Program.
Students MUST:
- make appointments to meet with the Program staff -- the Director or Coordinator
.
- notify in advance the office if circumstances prevent an appointment from being kept, or on time, and make a new appointment. Submit resumes completely and promptly.
- notify the Co-op Ed Office at once of all contacts with employers, including those made by mail, phone and in person.
- report fully on all discussions, meetings, conversations and interviews with employers.
- provide the required Progress Reports on the work experience completely and in timely fashion.
- report at once all unusual occurrences, favorable or problematic.
- if a student intends to withdraw or withdraws from the work assignment before completion, the student must notify the Office immediately and arrange a debriefing meeting with the Director or Coordinator.
