The Enrollment and Placement Process (cont.)

Step 2: Resume Referral Process

Matching the Student with the Job:
  • a very important step in the process requires placing "the right student in the right job" which involves such considerations as - the student's record, previous experience, interests, career goals, personal characteristics, schedule, transportation, etc. With respect to the job, it involves factors such as type of firm, nature of the business, job specifications, perfomance requirements, work place atmosphere, commitment, supervision, training, work schedule, pay location, etc.

Referrals to Jobs:

  • are made when a suitable -match between the student and the employer's job opportunity is indicated or can be developed. The procedure follows several paths:

    a. the job may be listed in The Career Center's Job Bank,
    b. an employer who provided such jobs previously may be contacted,
    c. contacts may be initiated with new employers in the appropriate field.

Student resumes are sent to employers on a continuing basis until the student accepts a suitable position.

  • The number of resumes sent for each student ranges from 5 to 20. In some cases the number may be higher, depending on student and/or major.
  • All resumes are forwarded to employers with cover letters.
  • Each resume referred to a company is logged in student's file.

Step 3: The Selection Process

Job Interview

  • Before the job interview the Co-op Ed Director or Coordinator meets with and counsels the student in proper interview techniques, attitude, appearance, conduct and potential questions and answers which may be discussed during the interview. When may be discussed during the interview. When needed, further assistance may be provided in the form of a mock interview.
  • Job interviews are scheduled by the student and any employment arrangement being considered is completely voluntary on the put of both employer and student.
  • Upon completion of the interview, the student gives the Office a full report, covering what transpired and the results. If a job was offered and accepted, the student must fumish the Office with the total arrangement made. If the job was not offered, the staff member involved will conduct a debriefing session with the student to determine reasons and to take the necessary improvement steps for future job referrals.

Counseling & Support

  • involves the range of employment-related activities including the job interview, performance and accountability on the job, evaluation of the work experience, relationships at the work site with co-workers, supervisors and management.

It also includes such personal development aspects as interpersonal communications and relations, responsibility, dedication, maturity, and enrichment.

When needed certain remediation services are prescribed such as: strengthening English language skills, instilling greater self-confidence and recommending or prescribing the special Co-op Education courses offered.
