You’ve made an important decision to come to City.

You took a major step when you decided to pursue a college education. Few decisions will have such an impact in your life. No matter what the reasons for your decision, college is the means by which you will achieve your goals.

For the 21st century student, college is not an option – it’s a necessity. This century, characterized as The Information Age, is transforming the way we live and work so drastically that your success in college is critical to your future success in the world of work.

Get Into Gear: It's Never Too Early to Start Thinking About Your Future

To ensure your success in your first year in college and throughout your college years, here are some important suggestions to consider and act upon:
  • Make connections with faculty, staff, and peers; form groups that support your college goals;
  • Understand why you are in college;
  • Develop sound study skills that will enable you to develop intellectual flexibility and creativity;
  • Integrate writing into your learning experience. Keep a journal;
  • Identify resources on campus that will help you succeed;
  • Find an advisor or counselor who will mentor you throughout college;
  • Be realistic and acquire a balanced approach to work, school, and personal life.

And most importantly,

  • Start to explore your interests, values, and skills as a preliminary stage of your career development

So, whether you’re coming to college to increase your knowledge, acquire a degree, develop self-awareness, or simply get a better job, college will expand your career options and help you achieve your career goals.
