Professional Development Workshop Series


Professional Development workshops are opened to all students but are designed to address the needs of juniors, seniors and graduate students. Students seeking internships are also strongly urged to attend these workshops.

Description of Workshops

Resume Writing

This workshop provides a general overview of resumes for both technical and non technical majors. Special emphasis is placed on format and content including phrasing of objective statements. Cover Letters Workshop

This workshop presents cover letters as an essential requirement for job search. A well written cover letter will draw an employer’s attention to the resume. This workshop explains what must be included in the cover letter to attract the attention of the recruiter, as well as how to write a thank you letter after the interview. Samples include:

Basic Interviewing Workshop

This workshop benefits all students at all levels of the job search process. The basic stage of the interview process are reviewed as well as candidate and employer expectations, dressing for the interview and follow-up strategies.

Advanced Interviewing Workshop

The first impression is a lasting impression. The advanced interviewing workshop is designed to help students develop a successful approach to interviewing. After you have a basic introduction and understanding of basic interviewing skills, you are provided the opportunity to apply your learning techniques. This workshop uses a role-play format to sharpen skills.

Mock Interviews

After perfecting an approach to interviewing, students are encouraged to participate in mock interviewing. A Mock interview is a scheduled practice interview which is taped. Students view the interview and critique their performance. A follow up session is then scheduled with the instructor to review the experience and plan for additional developmental activities.

Job Search Workshop

This workshop provides general information on job search techniques and strategies such as: sample questions, contact lists, and planning calendar worksheets which are excellent for planning, developing and manageing the job search process. Telephone etiquette is another important aspect of the job search process and has been added to the workshop.

Dressing for Success Workshop

This workshop is designed for students transitioning from college to the work environment. Participants are informed on acceptable interview apparel, and learn how and when to wear business casual or business professional attire.

International Student Workshop

This workshop is designed to familiarize foreign-born students with the rules for work authorization, as well as with employment opportunities for international students. The workshop addresses the major issues affecting employability for international students.

Job Fair Success Workshop

This workshop will instruct job seekers on effective presentation strategies. Job fairs offer opportunities to gather important information about job openings and industry trends which will help you in your job search.

Networking Workshop

The Networking Workshop presents vital information on effective networking and explains how networking is important for job search. It also demonstrates how to connect with professionals in related fields.
