Freshman Year: Career Awareness

Goal:
  • To understand the career planning process.

Objectives:

  1. To define the career development process.
  2. To identify steps in the process.
  3. To connect steps to a career plan.
  4. To explore interests, abilities, values, and skills.

Activity Plan:

  1. Preliminary assessment exercises to identify interests, aptitudes, values, personality type.
  2. Explore career options that reflect who you are.
  3. Explore academic disciplines that would provide a foundation for career development.
  4. Speak to academic and career advisors.
  5. Attend resume writing workshops.

Outcomes:

  1. Ability to create a chart/personal profile of interests, aptitudes, values, and type.
  2. Ability to articulate an initial career goal.
  3. Submission of a resume which successfully reflects an initial career plan.
Sophomore Year: Choosing a Major

Goal:
  • To be able to connnect interests, values, skills to career options and to a choice of major.

Objectives:

  1. To clarify interests, abilities, and skills.
  2. To assess personality characteristics ("type")
  3. To connect interests, values, and skills to careers.

Activity Plan:

  1. Meet with Career Counselor for career assessment.
  2. Review and revise personal profile chart.
  3. Develop a career vision statement and career goal.
  4. Talk to advisors and faculty about skills and areas of expertise.
  5. Revise resume.
  6. Continue to attend Career Fairs, Employer Information Sessions, etc.
  7. Talk to Career Center about an internship.

Outcomes:

  1. Successfully articulate the career planning process and how and why we choose a career.
  2. Ability to set career goals
  3. Ability to identify functional skills, interests, values, and motivators.
  4. Create a resume that effectively captures the personal profile.
  5. Identify a major.
  6. Be prepared for intership placement.





Junior Year: Experiential Learning

Goal:
  • To develop career related skills and experience through internships.

Objectives:

  1. To develop functional skills.
  2. To learn about work-place culture.
  3. To understand basic job search strategies.
  4. To learn time management.

Activity Plan:

  1. Visit Career Center to explore internships in chosen major.
  2. Complete internship enrollment.
  3. Become familiar with interviews; attend Interview Basics Workshop.
  4. Learn about volunteer, community service and study abroad opportunities.
  5. Update resume and revise career plan.

Outcomes:

  1. Completion of at least one internship by the end of the junior year (two are strongly urged).
  2. Development of critical career-related and functional skills.
  3. Competency in basic job search.
  4. Development of professional attitude, image, and confidence.
  5. Clarification of career needs.

Senior Year: Transitioning Strategies

Goal:
  • To successfully transition into the professional world of work or advanced studies.

Objectives:

  1. To develop a strategy plan for transition.
  2. To "master" skills in job search, interviewing, and decision making.
  3. To intensify networking efforts.
  4. To continue to develop skills through internships and other experiences.
  5. To develop and education plan.

Activity Plan:

  1. Attend Career Center Professional Development Workshops.
  2. Attend internal and external Career Fairs.
  3. Enroll in Career Center's Professional Recruitment Program.
  4. Participate in Information interviews, rpofessional organization meetings, etc.
  5. Reassess skills, experience, and goals.
  6. Revise/update Career Plan.
  7. Speak with Career Center Counselors.
  8. Develop a portfolio of awards, recommendations, projects, etc.
  9. Research graduate schools, etc.

Outcomes:

  1. Proficiency in job search strategies.
  2. Ability to articulate clearly a specific career path and jobs relevant to career path.
  3. Development of "career leadership" traits.
  4. Ability to successfully manage career.
