Cover Letter Tutorial
Resumes | Job Search

Every resume should always be accompanied by a cover letter. It is important to note that the cover letter in many situations is as important as the resume, if not more so. It is the cover letter -- not the resume -- that is read first by prospective employers. It is your first chance to make a good impression. A well-written cover letter enables you to direct the reader's attention to those aspects of your resume that are likely to inspire interest.

The cover letter provides an introduction of your qualifications, experience and desire for the potential job. The letter should be brief, no more than one page, and express your desire for an interview.

The following information should be included in a cover letter:
  • The cover letter must express your desire for the position, include the title of the position as well as where you saw the position announcement.
  • Include a brief description of how your experience relates to the position you are seeking. Use examples of how and when you used these particular skills.
  • Conclude by stating that you will call to request an interview. Also, include your phone number and when you will be available to start the position.
